Application Engineer - Battery & Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
We are looking for an Application Engineer to join our Design and Engineering team, working from our site in Saint-Pierre-du-Perray, Île-de-France, reporting directly to the R&D Manager based in Sweden. This position is crucial in supporting the technical implementation of our solutions, ranging from small batteries to multi-MWh energy storage projects. You will also act as a technical resource and coordinator for both OEM and BESS projects, collaborating closely with our sales team and marketing department to ensure optimal product development and implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Customer requirements and specifications:
- Analyze and synthesize customer needs, clarifying the technical and functional requirements.
- Verify the feasibility of customer requests in alignment with technical and business constraints.
- Develop functional specifications and technical requirements documents.
- Define the electrical, electronic, and software architecture.
- Prepare and present technical justifications and choices to internal and external stakeholders.
System architecture and design:
- Develop and validate system designs, including power converters, embedded network integration, and software interfaces.
- Ensure compliance with local and international safety and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate with production, quality, and mechanical teams to ensure optimal designs.
Project support and coordination: - Plan, organize, and prioritize project tasks.
- Estimate project costs and support the creation of technical and commercial offers.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact in all project meetings.
Technical assistance and troubleshooting:
- Coordinate the non-conformities with the suppliers and quality team.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting for batteries, BMS, control units, power converters, system connectivity, and energy performance issues.
- Conduct FMEA and implement risk assessment.
Installation, commissioning, and maintenance:
- Participate in the installation, commissioning, and testing of BESS.
- Develop and implement maintenance plans.
Documentation & reporting:
- Draft and maintain design documentation, functional analysis, and manufacturing and pre-installation files.
- Provide regular progress reports to the R&D manager and top management.
Training & collaboration:
- Conduct training sessions for customers and internal teams on system operation and maintenance.
- Collaborate with factories and suppliers to optimize designs and ensure product quality.
- Travel internationally for onboarding, product training, audits, and project implementation.
- Conduct technology and regulatory monitoring to stay ahead of industry developments.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree (MSc or MEng) in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Mechanical, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 3 years in energy storage, power electronics, or embedded systems.
- Soft Skills:
o Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
o Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
o Flexibility & willingness to travel nationally and internationally. - Technical Skills:
o Strong understanding of power electronics and embedded networks.
o Knowledge of technical CAD drawing tools (e.g., AutoCAD).
o Experience with BESS, BMS, & batteries would be considered an asset.
o Knowledge of thermal, mechanical, and electrical system validation would be an advantage. - Languages:
o Fluent in English and French (mandatory).
o Spanish and/or Italian is a plus.
